After 47 years on the airwaves, Fred is one of the longest-serving announcers in Waterloo region. Although this veteran broadcaster needs no introduction, he deserves one. Fred’s love of music is what got him started in the radio broadcasting business in 1960 at the age of 19 in Orillia. In 1966, Fred moved to Kitchener where he was a familiar voice for years on CFCA FM. He joined FM 98.5 CKWR in 1995.

Fred’s charisma and musicality makes him a most enjoyable radio host and an ideal midday companion, paving the way to a very fine day with his quick wit, lifestyle news, special guests and his signature features Recipe Corner and Something to Think About.

Fred shares his love of food, cooking and eating with his listeners daily on Recipe Corner, where he presents favourite recipes in all their yummy goodness, from mango chicken salad, to honey-glazed pork chops with zesty grilled corn, and key-lime coconut rum pie, to name just a few. Recipe Corner is always delicious and full of big flavour — Bon Appétit!

Something to Think About, a daily inspirational reading by Fred, offers perspective and balance in a very busy world. Uplifting, comforting, motivating and amusing, Something to Think About sends listeners on their way with something positive to think about.

For a copy of Fred’s favourite recipe or Something to Think About, simply send him a letter, indicating the desired recipe or reading, along with a self-addressed envelope.

Merritt in Stereo also has the features Cheers to Wine and Food at 9:40 am and The Medical Edge at 9:50 am.

Fred is a regular blood donor and has been giving since 1967 and he encourages his listeners to give, too. Sharing and giving are cornerstones of Fred’s philosophy. His personal interests, aside from his love of radio and food, are theatre, reading and travelling with his wife of 35 years, Joanne.
