Candlelight Classics & Poetry

Candlelight Classics and Poetry as heard on 98.5 CKWR had its early beginnings many decades ago when I was a kid visiting my grandmother. I heard the music of J.S. Bach for the first time on her old box radio, but it planted something in me that would broaden my appreciation of classical music. Even more when many years later visiting Holland with my Dutch wife, I heard a radio program there of classical music and poetry that seemed a celebration of life. That is what inspired me to launch Candlelight Classics and Poetry with CKWR in 1999. But with the passing of my wife that delayed its debut, it would go on to inspire me more in celebrating the timeless music of the Baroque through the Classical and the Romantic periods. My joyous mission then is to wind down your day with what I call ‘the finest classical music this side of heaven’ – music that has an enduring place in history: Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” indeed or, as in the poetry of Shakespeare, a “consummation devoutly to be wished”.
